Few people think of safety as an issue when selling their home. For Sale By Owners (FSBO) should be especially careful as they are often showing their homes to complete strangers. Many real estate offices have safety procedures in place to protect both themselves and their clients. Here are tips to help you if you are selling your home yourself.
Ask the client for his/her information over the phone and verify their information. Do not meet clients at your home alone. For open houses or showings ask friends or family members to assist you. Do not allow uninvited clients to stop by or take a quick peek. Tell all children or young adults not to answer the door or tell callers they are home alone. Never leave messages on your answering machine saying you are not home or on vacation. Request that all visitors sign a sign in sheet or fill out a form. For an added safety measure ask to verify their name by seeing their drivers license. Inform a friend or family member that you are showing your property and give them the clients information. Put away all valuables while showing your home. While the client is at your home have a phone nearby with 911 at the touch of a button. Let the client enter the room and you remain close to the door for a quick exit. After a showing or an open house check the locks on all windows and doors. Never discuss your personal schedule or home security system with callers. Make sure the home is well lit both inside and out. Keep all doors and windows locked at all times. Trim bushes in your yard to eliminate hiding places for possible offenders.
